Taipei, May 13 (CNA) Taiwan-born pop idol Jay Chou has nabbed the most Golden Melody nominations and is set to be one of the biggest winners as nominees of the most important award in the Chinese-language music world were revealed Friday.
Big-name stars, musicians and music critics will gather at Taipei Arena on June 18 to attend the 22nd Golden Melody Awards, the annual event that recognizes professionals who make music in Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka and Taiwan's aboriginal languages.
This year, 123 nominees in a total of 24 categories have been selected from 11,291 entries by an 85-member panel of judges led by Taiwanese composer/singer Jerry Huang.
Both the number of entries and the size of the judging panel are larger than they have ever been -- an indicator that Taiwan's music industry has continued to boom, said Philip Yang, minister of the Government Information Office at a press conference Friday to announce award nominations.
The 32-year-old singer/actor Jay Chou received seven nominations, including Best Mandarin Male, Best Mandarin Album, Best Song of the Year, Best Composer, and Best Album Composer with his release "The Era."
Chou will compete against Singaporean JJ Lin, Wang Lee-hom, veteran rocker Chyi Chin, and newcomer Wei Li-an for Best Mandarin singer.
In addition to being nominated as Best Mandarin Male, Wei took away three nominations, including Best Mandarin Album, Best Composer, and Best New Talent.
The Chairman, a Taiwanese rock band founded in 1997, also earned three nominations for Best Arrangement, Best Singing Group and Best Taiwanese Album.
Six Taiwanese bands, including Echo, IO, Monkey Pilot, Matzka, We Save Strawberries, and the Chairman will compete for the Best Singing Group.
On the Best Mandarin Female category, many are surprised that singers Jolin Tsai and Elva Hsiao did not get nominated. But Hong Kong singers Denise Ho and Karen Mok, Taiwan's aboriginal singer A-Lin, and Taiwan singers Wanfang and Freya Lim will vie for the title.
